“Kindling Roald Dahl’s Creative Flame” originates from the idea of giving students the opportunity to learn through hands-on tasks that foster innate creativity and innovation through messing, building, designing, making and creating in a meaningful way. We understand that knowledge is a consequence of experience and we believe that by bringing the design process into the classroom, students have many opportunities for learning and for developing confidence in their creative nature, challenging them to reach out beyond the academic experience.
The goal of this project is to bring the design process into the classroom to bolster and spur reading and writing skills through a hands-on project that encourages empathy, promotes action, fosters solving problem and at the same time allows the students to self-direct their own learning while gaining higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in the 21st century.
Students will read different books written by Roald Dahl. They will explore many of his characters and discuss all the challenges they face. In most stories, the character has a problem with which students empathize. Once they have done this, they will begin to build prototypes based on the needs of the character in the story. Having Roald Dahl as their ally, the possibilities are endless as long as they are sparkled by their imagination and creativity.
