After many sessions to analyze the play on different levels, the fourth and final stage arrived: bringing Shakespeare into the XXI century.
As stated previously, this was a year that presented lots of issues regarding social media. Our objective was to reflect on the fact that even during Shakespeare’s plays the characters were faced with similar problems. In order to do this, we asked the children to create an imovie where they would show chats and instagram images which could have been published had “Romeo and Juliet” taken place today. For this, we presented them with two programs where they could write the whatsapp conversations and simulate the use of instagram. This was done so that even though they seemed to be using the social networks, we wouldn’t expose minors to these applications.
The results were great! It was hard work to carry it out, but the children faced each step of the way with enthusiasm and perseverance. They started off with a draft copy of the chats and planned what their photos would look like and the caption they would have. Then they had a day to take all the pictures they needed and finally they compiled all their work into an Imovie. On the way, we encountered lots of problems regarding technology, but motivated by their objective, they were able to produce great movies.
Take a look at what they did:
