Reporters@SASS in Action!

Editorial Sessions

Following from Mr Massa’s visit, we changed our lesson format to organise the classroom like a real News editorial room, with students and teacher taking the roles of Chief Editor, Section Editors and Reporters. During these sessions we discussed the various events that were taking place within the school community, their newsworthiness, the angles that could be interesting for our audience, and finally decided which Reporter would go after each news to write their report. We kept a log with simple objectives and minutes of our sessions (for a glimpse of our logs, click here https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1PdGqRLCvlSRnlSRlpUOW9JNnc ).

In our first Editorial Session, we decided on the following Sections and potential news stories:

From then on, the Editorial Sessions took place with the different Sections working in groups on their individual articles.

Planning sessions involved discussion of the following questions:

  • What do I already know about the event?
  • What are the interesting aspects of the event?
  • Audience: Who will be interested in this particular piece of news?
  • What do I want/need to find out about the event?
  • Who can give me the information?
  • Who will I interview and what questions will I ask?

Students took notes, commented on one another’s work, made decisions: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1UBVDWB29aPJpSAh1PvmfsL-D_BsqVaAFMT00aUb7JKc https://drive.google.com/open?id=1x3Yfc2jL-1ef-j41OFpF1h2LeNF7qJj_DqpYPxLEEu8

At the same time, in ICT the focus was on the actual design and construction of our Site, in the following stages:

ICT:  Analyze different News Sites

Students were asked to visit at least three different News Sites.  They had to experience the Look and Feel of each site with special attention on  visual effects, layout and navigation features.

Examples of students work:

Violeta Camdessus

Mora Gerson

Lorenzo Suffern

Luca Seggiaro

ICT: Design a News Site

In their editorial groups student discussed possible layouts, colours, fonts, logo, etc for their News Site.   They later presented their design proposal on a slide to the rest of the class and received feedback from their peers.   The purpose of the activity was to come up with an agreement about the final design of the class News Site.

Proposals by year 8 CI
