An Author Study that Fosters Autonomy in Learners

One of our most popular projects this year was the Author Study our Y5 students did on Michael Morpurgo. The project’s final product is a book trailer (check one of our students’!) that is published in our Literature website as part of our “bank” for the following year’s students, who will watch the trailers before choosing which books to read. Apart from goals we had set for Literature as such, the way in which we implemented the project was aimed at fostering autonomy in our students. We wanted them to become more independent learners, who could take ownership and responsibility for their own learning process.  How did we achieve this? By shifting from a teacher-centred to a student-centred approach, in which learners take over control and become responsible leaders and decision-makers. Organising our lessons around stations enabled us to reach our goals.
