Mini scientists
Among all the hustle and bustle of first grade in Punta Chica in 2013 we chose ONE unit to share with you for this Contest: “Mini Scientists”
Here are some facts about this unit to get you started before witnessing our work:
It was born from conversations we´ve had in the past few years (Thank you Florence Zanocchi, thank you Moira McCallum, thank you Jean Robert Andre from Grace Church Schools in New York)
It began to grow as we came up with meaningful learning activities that would help us reach the objectives we had set for ourselves.
It took on a life of its own when our students began to ask more and more questions, and their curiosity grew showing us which way to go.
It didn’t turn out exactly as we had planned it would (the control bean watered with nothing but Coca Cola actually grew tall and strong!!) but like in life, things don´t always follow a strict plan.
So, why are we submitting this , you may ask?!
We chose our 2013 Mini Scientists Unit because it is our latest innovation. Our latest leap of faith. Our latest adventure. Our latest “Y , si, dale… probemos…”
As a team we are constantly provoking each other to think differently, to review our practices, to come up with more exciting challenges for both our students and ourselves. Each of us in our very different approaches, with our different personalities and idiosyncrasies makes the other a better professional.
This was a unit we thoroughly enjoyed… and we proved scientifically that the children enjoyed as well.
This was OUR latest challenge.
Hope you agree that it was a good one to take!
