Teachers involved : 3rd. grade English class teachers (Maria Laura Garcia and Karen Roberts) and IT teacher (Verònica Parodi)

Level : 3rd. grade  (Age 8)

Students Involved : Two 3rd. grade classes of 25 students each working pairs.

Objectives :

Students in 3rd grade read the classic “Around the World in 80 days”.  This project about Explorers goes hand in hand with the concept the book explores: exploring other cultures and becoming acquainted with other customs and traditions.

  • Students will explore the concept of exploration: What is exploring? Why do people explore different places?

  • Students will become acquainted with explorers of different times (Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Wright Brothers and Neil Armstrong) and they will establish relationships among them.

Aim of the project :

  • Students will be able to present the different explorers by creating a keynote presentation that incorporates text, images and other material as webs, drawings and videos created with other Ipad Apps.

Final Digital Product : Digital Presentation on Keynote App using Ipads

Technology Device used : 13 Ipads (1 for each group of 2 students)

Previous Class Work :

Students in 3A and B were divided into 3 different groups taking into account their reading level.  Each group read about each explorer in different sessions and watched videos about them.  You can watch the videos by clicking here.

Afterwards, each class worked in mixed-ability groups sharing the information from the texts and videos.  After that, each student completed a research sheet about each explorer.

Step – by – Step /  Final Product  :

Keynote PRESENTATION

The pupils used the Ipads to create a presentation of the topic using Keynote. The worked in groups of two. With the help of their copybooks that had the information of the important facts of these famous explorers, they designed slides in Keynote to present these historical characters. They presented each explorer in a different way :

Marco Polo

  1. Use Safari to look for photos of Marco Polo and his voyages. The search was done writing Marco Polo Explorer for kids, so they narrow their search to more specific images.

  2. Saved the images in the Camera Roll

  3. Create a first Slide to present Marco Polo, adding images previously saved and explaining why he was famous.

  4. Write information about him in a second slide writing the most important facts, consulting their copybooks with info that they researched.

Christopher Colombus

  1. Use Safari to look for photos of Christopher Columbus and save them in the camera roll.

  2. Create a first Slide to present Marco Polo, adding images previously saved and explaining why he was famous.

  3. Create a Timeline in the second slide using SHAPES in which they wrote information of his first voyage and biographical data about him ordered chronologically.

  4. Create a third slide with images and information of his boats.

Wright Brothers

  1. Present the Wright Brothers in a first slide with pictues of them and their planes

  2. saved previously in Safari

  3. Used Inspiration App in the same Ipads to create a web of the Wright Brothers

  4. They saved this web as a PDF to be lately inserted in the Keynote as a second slide

image

Neil Armstrong

  1. Use Safari to look for photos of Neil Armstrong and save them in the camera roll.

  2. Create a first Slide to present Neil, adding images previously saved and explaining why he was famous.

  3. Used Drawing Pad App to make two drawings, one of Neil stepping on the mook and one of the rocket. They saved the drawings in the camera roll

  4. Insert the two drawings in Keynote using one slide for each.

  5. Insert shapes with written information about Neil and the Mission wrote in first person.

Transitions and Animation options were applied to slides and objects to give life to the presentation.

FAVOURITE EXPLORER

The students used PAGES App to write which was his favourite explorer and why. This text was then memorized by them for the Video.

On the last week, the students were video recordered with the Ipad´s video camera saying which one was their favourite explorer and why, they also included a question that they would like to ask this explorer if he was alive.

This video was uploaded to dropbox and the inserted in each keynote presentation as a last and final slide.

Conclusion

Students enjoyed using different apps for this project. They had to organize themselves to work in pairs using the same ipad each IT period. They were free to work on the floor or wherever they felt comfortable. They came to agreements and took turns as regards who wrote and who read the information from the copybooks. They asked their teachers (Class and IT teacher) for help when they needed.  We offered some tips on the blackboard to open their minds with ideas for the web and the timelines.
